The Institute of Computer Science was formed as the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information in the year 1974. Since then it had been running MA studies in the field of scientific and technical information. From 1993 that faculty was replaced by a three-year BA program in the field of information technology. In 1994, the Institute changed its name to the Institute of Applied Computer Science and in 1997 to the Institute of Computer Science.

Currently, the course of Information Technology comprises three and a half year engineering studies, or three years BA studies and two years MA studies. On the other hand, the course of Biomedical Engineering offers three and a half year Engineering studies. In the academic year 2011/2012 ,61students of BA studies were being educated, 215 Engineering students and 148 MA students and Biomedical Engineering educated 262 Engineering students. The Institute is a part of the Department of Information and Materials Sciences ( of the University of Silesia ( Since 2002 r. the Department of Information and Materials Sciences has had rights to award titles of Information Science Doctor.

Since 1st of September 2012 r. the head of the Institute is Professor Doctor Engineer Zygmunt Wróbel.
